Lipsi island does not have a historical and cultural heritage of particular importance, but in return offers beautiful scenery with its vineyards, olive groves and green hills as well as beautiful beaches with crystal clear water. To get around the island it is not neccesary to have neither a map nor follow any directions, just get lost along the various paths.

Beaches close to the harbour

In the immediate vicinity of the city is the beautiful beach of Lindou, characterized by very low and crystal clear water. Continuing along the road you come to Kambos bay, much more quiet cove than Lindou beach that also offers a spectacular sea. In this area you can find several other coves divided from each other by rocks, to enjoy the sea in more privacy. Helena or Elena beach is a rock beach which is also situated west of Lipsi Town and it is set behind a small church. It is a bit more difficult to reach and you have to climb down a track from the hill to get there.

This road continues to Plati Gialos and after about 1 km is reported indication for the church Κimissi tis Theotokou located in the beautiful bay of Kimissi. The church, in the middle of the green and close to a source of fresh water, is known as the relics of the Orthodox monks who were martyred by the Ottomans chose to die of hunger and thirst rather than be captured by the soldiers of the Sultan. It was announced their beatification by the Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church. Except for the church there is also the beautiful hidden beach Kimissi, a beach of small pebbles, ideal for those seeking the hidden coves. The sea in the bay is beautiful and being far enough away is never crowded. Bring at least something to drink with you since the beach does not offer any service.

Platy Gialos beach

For sure, the most beautiful beach on the island of Lipsi is located about 3 km from the town and is called Plati Gialos. This beautiful bay of Lipsi is undoubtedly the most popular, and the mere sight of this white sand beach and turquoise sea is breathtaking. Shallow water and sandy bottom make bathing idyllic, you can also find some shade under the pines and olive trees at the beach or in the nearby tavern. The only drawback of this paradise is that in August is quite crowded. Here you will always find the famous  Lipsi ducks.

Passing near the church of St. John the Theologian and ending downhill at Moscato, you will reach a small port used mostly for fish farms. Looking back, at the junction before going down to Kambos, you can turn left and follow the scenic road that passes over the country side.  Along this stretch of road there are several secluded beaches immersed in the wild, many of which can be reached through the dirt roads to be made preferably on foot.

These beaches  bear the names of Kamaries, a small pebble beach; Monodendri, famous for the one and only tree and only one where nudism is somehow allowed but also the most difficult to reach. Tourkomnima and Xirokampos are a bit less out of the way. Kohlakoura before Katsadia, a pebble beach surrounded by rock formations and cliffs, ideal for snorkelling.

Beaches in the South

Before Kohlakoura beach you will see on the cross road the church Panagia Tou horou, which guarded the sacred icon of the Virgin (now on display in the Cathedral of Lipsi)  where the miracle of the blooming lilies began. All over the island are scattered many small churches with blue domes.

Last bay located in the south of Lipsi is Katsadia, about 2 km to the south of the town. There are several beaches in the bay of Katsadia but the best known and most popular is the one that bears the name of the bay. Not very large, lined by tamarisk trees, this beach is characterized by a fine golden sand and shallow water. Along the path, after the tavern, you can find some coves generally quieter and less crowded than the main bay. Sandy Papandria beach in the south, facing the island of Leros, offers a typical sight of reeds and a beautiful natural setting.
